This Meadow is filled with plants that attract Bugs, Butterflies and Birds. A varied environment, with a swampy zone near the road and hot and dry going towards the hill. Lots of challenges and opportunities in this 4300 sq. ft. Meadow!!
We created this oasis to be shared and visited by our winged beauties and their buggy buddies! We are creating and visioning a wild garden that will be filled with bugs and is a haven for the birds. When we were planting, Bees, Butterflies and even a Firefly, stopped by to see what we were up to. We planted 100s of plugs of Milkweed, Aster, Goldenrod and Wild Grasses. Then we over-seeded with mixes of seed that are specific to our native pollinators, here in Maine. We also installed an Elderberry Forest and a swath of Joe Pye Weed, (Eupatorum, Gateway).

First Light Garden...
is nestled on the backside of the dunes at Pine Point Beach. We used Native Pollinator Plants and flowers, we mixed with evergreens and stone paths. Adding large boulders, small stones and a birdbath created the environmental habitat that our Insects, Birds and small critters count on in nature. No food desert here.

This sweet little garden is now in it's third year. We have casted a mix of native seeds, bought and collected. We also mow the lawn, only a few times a month, and we have been casting clover seeds, so in a few years, the lawn will be a sea of green and provide habitat for our insects, bees and birds!

This is the defining inspiration for the garden at the Center for P.E.A.C.E., living in harmony with nature.
Sharing our landscape with all living things and giving habitat to little birdies, butterflies, bees and bugs. Maine is rich in beauty but has a limited growing season, natives and pollinator plants in this climate are the easiest to grow and care for year to year. This public garden at the Center is a welcome respite for our winged friends. We made sure to add drifts of Queen Annes Lace, Dill, Verbena, Asters, Sunflowers, Rudebeckia and Coreopsis. These beauties create lots of pollen and nectar and welcome butterflies, other moths and insects to lay eggs and continue to multiply! This is important, now the bees will have plenty of nectar and the resident birds will have a host of live insects and the caterpillars of butterflies and moths to feed their clutches of baby birdies. As you look through this slide show consider these simple points.
1. Native Plants love our crazy northern climate. They not only survive they thrive without any fuss or bother from you!
2. A native garden once established needs very little water or care from you. No mowing, minimal weeding, pruning and no deadheading, we let the plants live a full life cycle and cut everything back (now is when we use the mower) in the very late fall after
3. Pollinator Plants will bring a host of garden residents onto your property, birdies, bees, butterflies and some very interesting moths.
4. No need for regular mowing. If you must have a bit of lawn, you can use ground cover instead of grass, such as, Alpine Strawberry, Thyme, Chamomile, Pennyroyal or various varieties of Moss. You will never have to mow this type of "Green Lawn". If you must have some grass, mow weekly on the highest setting.
5. A Pollinator and Native Garden will free up time and lots of money, so you will be able to spend more quality time with those you love in a poison free environment.Happy Pets, Kids and Parents!!! Today is the day.

Philosophy: Imagine a garden without poisons, chemicals or plants that are not native. Re-wilding your garden is an adventure that will take you places you never knew could exist. Changing your garden over to a natural habitat, will attract Bees, Birds, Butterflies and a host of other living things. You will spend very little money on landscape maintenance, mowers, blowers and chemicals. You also will have more time with your family, to go out and explore nature. Sounds perfect? We are a part of this mix and our world would be a healthier place if we all took responsibility for being a better citizen of this planet. I believe this approach is an easy lifestyle to adopt. Planting for your exact zone, (what lived there before folks came in and planted foreign trees, bushes and flowers?) I have become fascinated with the fact that all of our native Plants and Trees have relationships with our native bugs, insects and birds. No Joke. Think about this an Oak Tree can support 535 Species, but a Gingko Tree only supports 5 species. Planting Trees and Ornamentals that are not native is not good for our local birds, bugs or insects. Did you know that caterpillars are the only food for baby birds. No caterpillars, no birdies.
A perfect world has the balance of everything. If we incorporate this mindfulness when designing our outdoor spaces, we are changing the world. No lawn chemicals are flowing down the drain to the streams, rivers then into the sea. There are alternatives to a lawn-like green space, that needs very little care and water. Thinking differently is a brave and wonderful experience and when we lead by example, it makes all the difference.
Gardens/Exterior: Outside green is easy. Organic, or chemical free is the first step. Material and planting choices is the second. Consider your lawn. It takes so much to have one. We have to water it to keep it green. We mow it to keep it short, we have to get rid of the grass cuttings, they typically go to a landfill, and take up more space while they are composting. So think about other things you could do with that piece of land. How about considering a courtyard with large pieces of stone, brick or even gravel. Maybe a add fountain or a pergola planted with grapes and a dining table for entertaining and having supper. You could put in a reflecting pool or for the same amount of water you could have an amazing organic vegetable garden or a small orchard of fruit trees. Yes, the possibilities are amazing.
Going green is easy it is all about the choices we make.
